The unit has a total of 37 beds, including a combination of private and semi-private rooms. Patient ratios are 1:4-6 during the day shift and 1:5-6 during the night shift. The Electronic Medical Record system used is EPIC. Charge nurses are available 24/7, depending on scheduling, and they may take patient assignments when necessary. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are present on the unit, with a ratio of 1:10-15. There is a requirement to work every other weekend, covering both Saturday and Sunday. Holidays may also require working, depending on the schedule; it would typically be every other holiday if needed. Scrubs may vary; there is no specific scrub color, and approved logo gear is acceptable. Patients requiring telemetry are monitored by a central tech, with common drips including Lasix and Heparin. The unit does not handle ventilated patients but accepts those on BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen. In-house coverage includes multiple hospitalists during the day and advanced practice nurse coverage at night. Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24/7. Shifts are 12 hours, with day shifts from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM and night shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. Self-scheduling is available, but management will arrange schedules to meet weekend requirements. Floating to other floors may occur if the clinician has the necessary competencies, taking full patient assignments. The floor-specific orientation consists of two days in the department and one day of hospital orientation. Common patient diagnoses include COPD, sepsis, CVA, COVID, pneumonia, and various surgical procedures.
