Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Valid registered nurse license required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Experience with peritoneal dialysis preferred Description: The medical surgical unit has 52 beds, all private rooms. The nurse-to-patient ratio is mostly 1:7 for both day and night shifts. Nurses take a full patient assignment and work alongside a Clinical Assistant, who supports in patient care and administrative tasks. Certified Nursing Assistants are available, with a typical ratio of 1:10-12 per shift. Weekend requirement includes working every other weekend, with shifts set for Saturday and Sunday. Holidays are rotated among staff. Scrub color is navy blue for registered nurses and grey for certified nursing assistants. Remote telemetry is monitored as needed. Nurses are not required to read telemetry strips, but experience in this area is advantageous. Common infusions include heparin and PCA with morphine sulfate; cardiac infusions or insulin are not typical. Intermittent BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow devices are available for support. A hospitalist is present 24/7 for patient care, as well as an intensivist in the ICU. An IV team is in-house 24/7 and responsible for starting all IVs. Respiratory therapy is also available 24/7, along with pharmacy services. Shifts are scheduled 6 weeks in advance, allowing up to six requests for time off within that period. Floating may occur to other medical surgical or medical surgical/oncology units as needed. The unit cares for patients with various diagnoses, including post-operative orthopedic and neurological surgeries, infections, and chronic conditions. Patients being tested for COVID typically remain on the unit. Charting is done using Allscripts.
