Description: The unit has a total of 30 beds. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common diagnoses include total joint replacement, spinal surgery, urology procedures, and abdominal surgeries such as laparoscopic appendectomy and bowel resection. Other patient types include bariatric cases, medical overflow, and those with hemodynamic drains and JP drains. Colostomies are managed on the unit, but gynecological cases do not transfer to this area. Patients requiring cardiac telemetry will be managed on a separate unit. RNs are not required to titrate drips, although occasional heparin drips, PCA pumps, and TPN may be present. There is a charge nurse on each shift and the charge nurse may occasionally take a low-acuity assignment during night shifts. Patient care technicians are available, with a ratio of 1 tech per 12 patients. RNs are only required to troubleshoot respiratory equipment such as nasal cannulas. Remote telemetry services are utilized, and there are monitor technicians to interpret readings. RNs do not read their own telemetry strips. Shifts run from 0700-1930 and 1900-0730. The manager will create the schedule; rotating day and night shifts occur no more than weekly. Weekend work is required every other weekend, and holiday work is as needed. Floating is necessary to medical and telemetry units, with support available for interpreting strips. Bedside shift report is an expectation, promoting clear communication within the team. A close-knit culture is fostered within the unit.
