Description: The RN Clinical Periop Nurse is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed caregivers. This team ensures that patients, families, and significant others receive individualized, high-quality, safe patient care. The role requires practicing in a clinical environment supported through a shared governance model. The framework for practice is steered by a professional practice model and evidence-based practice and research. RN competencies are derived from these models and supported by core competencies. It is expected that all RN Clinical Nurses are licensed, knowledgeable, and uphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the relevant nursing practice acts. They implement the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards as put forth by the American Nurses Association. As a member of the patient services team, the individual must uphold the voice of the patient while supporting service excellence goals. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The RN Clinical Periop Nurse performs the nursing process which includes assessment, diagnosis, identification of outcomes, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Care is individualized and coordinated through effective partnerships, with a focus on optimal patient care outcomes. The nurse provides relationship-based patient-centered care that is consistent with population-specific characteristics. All interactions should reflect an understanding of cultural diversity. Patient engagement is emphasized through meaningful communication methods tailored for the setting. The nurse coordinates the delivery and documentation of safe quality patient care. This includes diverse and inclusive interdisciplinary communication methods and the completion of timely documentation. Participation in performance improvement initiatives and support for shared governance is crucial. Professional Development and Initiative: The RN Clinical Periop Nurse is responsible for completing all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments and required education. They may serve as a preceptor or mentor for other nurses and staff to ensure a qualified workforce. Evidence-Based Practice and Research: This role promotes evidence-based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement in nursing. Participation in the decision-making process involving patient care products is encouraged. Resources and Support: Proactive care planning for patients is essential in this role. Collaboration with care managers to develop and update protocols and procedures is expected to achieve best practice outcomes.
