Job Title: Medical-Surgical Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Women's Medicine Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 7 PM - 7 AM Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 Years Required License: Active RN License Certifications: BLS Must-Have: - Must pass an ECG Exam on day 2. - Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills. - Ability to function independently and support a developing team. Description: Women’s Medicine Unit features 48 private rooms, including three negative pressure rooms. The ratio of nurses to patients is 4:1-5:1. Charge nurses do not take patients but manage bedboard and assignments. In tight staffing situations, the second charge nurse may take patients. Certified nursing assistants and clinical technicians have a ratio of approximately 8:1-10:1, and a unit secretary is available. Weekend requirement includes four weekend shifts every six weeks, with shifts on Saturdays and Sundays for days and Friday through Sunday nights for nights. A holiday rotation is established among the staff. Navy blue scrubs are required. Telemetry and continuous pulse oximetry are used, with remote monitoring of patients 24/7. Electronic Medical Records utilized is Epic. Nurses manage heparin drips and titrate them, along with cardiac and insulin drips that do not require titration. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7, in addition to pharmacy services. 12-hour shifts are followed, working from 7 AM to 7:30 PM and 7 PM to 7:30 AM. Self-scheduling is practiced, and block scheduling is permitted if preferred. Floating may occur to other medical-surgical units. Orientation includes three shifts on the unit with a preceptor. Common diagnoses in this unit include acute respiratory failure, heart failure exacerbation, altered mental status, falls, failure to thrive, small bowel obstruction, cancer-related issues, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleed, ascites, anemia, acute kidney injury, and sickle cell crises. End-of-life hospice care is also provided. There is a significant emphasis on teamwork, adaptability, and the ability to mentor and educate less experienced staff members.
