Travel RN - Med/Surg/Tele Float Pool Position Summary

WVU United Hospital Center - Bridgeport, WV

  • Shift: 12-hour Days (07:00 - 19:00)

  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Orientation: 1-2 shifts with preceptor
  • Trauma Level: Level 2

⚠️ FLOAT POOL POSITION - Multiple Unit Assignments

Primary Float Units:

  1. 6N - 36 beds (frequent assignment)
  2. 7N - 29 beds (frequent assignment)

Secondary Float Units:

  1. 4N - 36 beds
  2. 5S - 36 beds
  3. 6S - 36 beds
  4. Critical Care - 20 beds

Unit Details - Med/Surg/Tele Float Pool

  • Nurse:Patient Ratio:
    • Standard: 1:5-6 (both days and nights)
    • Occasional: up to 1:7 toward end of shift
    • Adjusted based on acuity
  • EMR System: EPIC
  • Monitors: Phillips brand
  • Tele Techs: Available on most units (RNs must still read/interpret strips)

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • MUST HAVE:
    • Must pass cardiac rhythm exam (all travelers required)
    • Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips
    • ACLS certification (should prepare for rhythm exam)
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (required)
    • ACLS (required)
  • License: Active WV RN license (copy of unexpired driver's license REQUIRED at submission)
  • BSN: Not required
  • First-Time Travelers: OK if they can pass cardiac rhythm exam

Patient Population & Clinical Skills

  • Common Diagnoses:
    • CHF (Congestive Heart Failure)
    • Cardiac catheterization
    • Chest pain
    • Pneumonia
    • Chronic renal disease
    • COPD
    • Ortho (orthopedic)
    • Oncology (perm staff administers chemo)
  • Drip Management:
    • No titration required
    • Will not have set-rate cardiac drips
  • Telemetry: Must read/interpret strips, monitor techs provide updates
  • RT Equipment: CPAP and BiPAP only (RT manages all respiratory)

Staffing Support

  • Charge Nurse: On all units
    • Day charge: No patient assignment
    • Night charge: Takes patient assignment
  • CNAs: Available on all units
  • Monitor Techs: On most units (RNs still interpret strips)
  • RT: Manages respiratory equipment

Schedule Requirements

  • Shift Times: 07:00 - 19:00 (Days)
  • Weekends: Every other weekend (Saturday & Sunday both shifts)
  • Holidays: Work into perm staff holiday rotation schedule
  • Call/Standby: None mentioned
  • Manager-Created Schedule: Made out by manager/scheduler
  • Float Assignment:
    • Report to clinical coordinator's office PRIOR to shift start for unit assignment
    • Most likely assigned a "parent unit"
    • Assigned only basic telemetry patients within scope of practice
    • Could float to all 6 units as needed

CRITICAL Requirement ⚠️

Cardiac Rhythm Exam:

  • Required for ALL travelers
  • RNs with ACLS should be able to pass easily
  • Must pass to work on unit

Driver's License Submission:

  • 50-mile radius rule
  • Copy of unexpired driver's license REQUIRED at submission
