Description:
This position involves working in an inpatient surgical unit with a focus on med surg/telemetry.
The unit has a total of 48 beds across two buildings.
Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-6 during nights and 1:5-6 during the day.
LPNs are available to assist, along with virtual admission and discharge nurses.
A primary care nursing model is frequently used, and candidates should be comfortable with this model.
Common diagnoses include neuro procedures such as laminectomy and cervical fusion, along with abdominal surgeries like ostomies and hernia repairs.
Joint replacements, including total hips and knees, are also frequently performed.
The unit manages complex cases such as PICC lines, TPN, lipids, femoral popliteal bypass, and dialysis catheter insertions.
Experience with chronic pain management, including narcotics and sepsis protocols, is beneficial.
Nurses are expected to interpret telemetry strips, as there is a telemetry technician monitoring the units.
Charge nurses usually have a lighter patient assignment during the day, while nights may involve house supervisor duties.
There are nurse aides available, although they may be reassigned as sitters if needed.
The unit works with equipment such as CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen, managed by respiratory therapy staff.
Shift scheduling consists of three 12-hour shifts with staggered start times.
Self-scheduling is not guaranteed; preferences should be discussed with the leadership team.
Weekend work is required every other weekend.
Holidays are also part of the core staff rotation.
There are no call or standby requirements, and floating will only occur to similar units.
The unit conducts a 12-hour orientation shift on the first day of hire.
This is a fast-paced environment with a high admissions and discharge volume.
Candidates should be prepared for a challenging workload with significant patient acuity.
