Description:
The position is in an Observation Unit managing patients with anticipated short lengths of stay up to two midnights.
The unit aims to provide high-quality, efficient care without discharging or admitting patients prematurely.
Patients may be boarded in observation status from the Emergency Department.
Patients are typically stable and unlikely to require an upgrade in care.
The goal is for discharge in less than two midnights.
Unit providers include Advanced Practice Providers and supervising Medical Doctors.
The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:4 with a charge nurse included in the assignment.
Available resources include Registered Nurses, Patient Care Assistants, and Unit Coordinators.
Patient diagnoses include:
- Dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities
- Nausea and vomiting
- Chemotherapy/radiation symptom management
- Acute kidney injury
- Palliative/pain control
- Urinary tract infections
- Syncope
- Post-procedure observations requiring an overnight stay
- Transition to hospice
- PEG tube/line placements
- Fever of unknown origin
Special equipment utilized in the unit includes IV pumps and telemetry monitoring.
Candidates must complete all required credentials promptly after accepting the position.
Interdisciplinary support is available from various teams, including IV teams, physical therapy, respiratory services, and pharmacy.
