This role assumes responsibility for a group of patients during a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients by utilizing the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, and resources within the institution's philosophy. Essential functions include performing all responsibilities and duties specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Accurate documentation of nursing care provided must be maintained. The RN completes initial assessments upon patient admission. An appropriate plan of care is developed in accordance with unit standards. This plan is based on patient and family needs. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. The plan of care is modified based on continuous evaluation. Patient and employee safety must be taken into account by reporting and correcting safety hazards and incidents. Communication with colleagues is essential, both directly and privately when necessary to resolve issues. Constructive feedback is offered to assist in the professional development of peers. The RN confers with colleagues to expand their knowledge base. Identifying one's own learning needs and taking initiative to address them is crucial. All requirements for departmental competencies must be fulfilled. Department-specific functions include assessing ortho and medical/surgical patients every shift. Education on wound care, mobility, self-care, medication management, and care transition needs is provided to patients. Coordination with physician and surgical partners on patient care is essential. The RN delegates and monitors interventions of the healthcare team staff. Setting up ortho traction and manipulating surgical traction devices for mobility and wound care is required. Wound appliances, such as vacs, drains, pouches, and other devices must be managed. The RN may also perform trauma assessments and procedures as needed. Proficiency in using EPIC is required for documentation and care management. The RN is expected to engage in continuous professional development. Knowledge expansion and fulfillment of departmental training needs are also important.
