This position involves supervising and delegating care responsibilities to ancillary personnel in accordance with their scope of practice. Essential functions include performing physical and psychosocial assessments of patients, demonstrating knowledge and consideration of age and cultural differences, and initiating a multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan in collaboration with the healthcare team. The nurse must demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment in managing perinatal emergencies, including crash C-sections, precipitous deliveries, and shoulder dystocia. Competence in assessing fetal and maternal well-being, amniotic fluid status, and vaginal bleeding is crucial, along with recognizing and managing abnormalities. Effective management of pain control in laboring patients is vital, supporting and implementing alternative pain control methods as appropriate. The nurse should assist with epidural catheter placement and monitor fetal and maternal status during the process and after medication administration. Education for patients and families in all stages of the perinatal and postpartum periods is necessary, utilizing methods appropriate to age, condition, culture, and learning readiness. Timely and accurate documentation of all nursing care provided, including evaluations of patient responses to medications, treatments, and procedures, is required. Consistent performance of necessary safety and quality control checks is expected, along with the completion of other job-related duties as assigned.
