Job Title: Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Labor and Delivery Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 7 PM - 7 AM Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years in Labor and Delivery License: RN Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced FHM, MOABCST Must-Have: - Must have completed at least 1 assignment in a facility comparable in size and acuity level Description: As soon as possible start required. Mandatory simplified interviews for candidates. Minimum years of experience required is at least 2 years in Labor and Delivery. First-time travelers will not be accepted. Unit operates with an average of 1800 deliveries per year. Typically, 4 scheduled events are conducted daily including c-sections and versions. There are 7 labor rooms and 2 triage rooms available on the unit. Covers a large geographical area with numerous referrals for NICU services. Currently, the unit does not hold Baby Friendly designation. Rooming-in model for Mother-Baby is implemented. Labor Delivery and Mother-Baby are adjacent units with restricted access. Common patient types include PIH, GDM, Pre-Eclampsia, Eclampsia, HELLP, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, and drug addiction. Newborn care responsibilities may fall on the labor nurse if the mother requires continuous surveillance. Patient ratios include: - Cervical ripening: 1:1 to 3 - Laboring: 1:1 to 3 - Active labor: 1:1 - Couplet/Postpartum/Antepartum: 3 Mother-Baby couplets or 3 Antepartum/NICU mothers. Minimum staffing goal is 6 RNs both day and night shifts, but may operate with 5 if needed. Required skills include the ability to titrate Pitocin, perform fetal scalp electrode placements, conduct cervical exams, assist with epidural placements, and manage various drips including insulin and magnesium. Experience with neonatal resuscitation and newborn care, including lactation support, is essential. OB Technicians will be responsible for setup and assisting with vaginal deliveries and repairs. Unit support includes an in-house charge nurse and a bed flow facilitator during the day. Phlebotomy services and anesthesia coverage are available 24/7. Fetal monitoring is conducted at both bedside and the nursing station. Floating to Mother-Baby may occur but will be limited to Antepartum and Postpartum. Weekend rotation expectations include working at least 4 shifts out of 8 in a schedule. Holidays will be rotated among staff.
