Includes the responsibility for assessment of childbearing women, neonates, and family needs. Involves development of care plans to meet identified needs. Implementation of nursing interventions and evaluation of care based on outcomes for the population served is essential. Education: Completion of an accredited registered nurse program required. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Effectively functions as a team member and liaison between patient and staff. Supports and encourages harmonious communication skills. Requires strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills. Communicates in a highly professional manner at all times. Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance when dealing with patients. Uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and a professional attitude with patients, families, and coworkers. Essential Functions: Assists women and infants to attain and maintain optimum health by: Assessing patient and family's developmental level, health status, and health history. Performing initial assessment and stabilization of the neonate. Developing a plan of care based on identified physical and learning needs. Teaching self-care and/or care of the newborn to patients and families. Assists families to achieve balance between personal growth needs and family functioning by: Considering data relating to role relationships and interaction patterns of families in care planning. Promoting understanding of the influence of family relationships on health status. Identifies and intervenes with vulnerable patients and families at risk to prevent potential developmental and health problems by: Providing support and collaborating with other healthcare disciplines for treatment and referrals. Facilitating interaction between family members to promote bonding. Promotes an environment free of hazards to reproduction, growth and development, wellness and recovery from illness. Assists patients and families to understand and cope with health issues and childbirth. Accepts responsibility and accountability for maintaining knowledge, skills, and competency in care of women and infants by: Maintaining awareness of professional issues.
