Job Title: RN - ICU Profession: Nursing Specialty: Critical Care Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12hr Day Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum 2 years ICU RN experience License: Required Certifications: NIHSS, BLS, ACLS Must-Have: CCRN preferred but not required Description: This position is for an RN specializing in the Intensive Care Unit. The facility has 637 licensed beds and a Level 1 Trauma designation. It is a teaching hospital equipped as a Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center. The unit has 14 beds and a current census of 14 patients. Common diagnoses include respiratory failure, renal failure, sepsis, GI bleeding, DKA, hypotension, hypertension, stroke, pneumonia, cancer, ARDS, and overdoses. The unit cares for chronic ventilator and chronic trach patients. The patient population includes hemodynamically unstable patients requiring invasive monitoring and close observation. The patient-to-nurse ratio is typically 1:1-2, with the possibility of 3 in rare cases. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) assist with patient care duties. Nurse responsibilities include trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, and managing various infusions. Nurses will monitor and manage invasive lines like arterial and central venous catheters. Assisting in bedside procedures such as chest tube placements and tracheostomy care is required. Knowledge and management of patients on ventilator support is essential. Support within the department includes CNAs assisting with vitals, glucose checks, baths, feeding, ambulating patients, and obtaining blood samples. There is a unit secretary on shift from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Resource nurses, discharge nurses, and a team for critical care management are available. Respiratory therapists and hospitalists are present 24/7, along with intensivists. Central telemetry monitoring is provided. Electronic medical records, IV pumps, and medication dispensing systems are utilized. Floating to other adult ICU units may occur. The unit operates as a busy yet team-oriented environment.
