It is also a teaching hospital with a designated Chest Pain Center and a Stroke Center. The unit consists of 29 beds with an average census of 29 patients per day. The patient population includes but is not limited to neuro ICU cases such as ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhages, traumatic brain injuries, seizures/status epilepticus, and spinal cord injuries. Nurses will be responsible for patients post-operative from cranial surgeries, as well as those arriving straight from interventional radiology procedures. Fifty percent of TNK (Tenecteplase) administrations will occur on the unit. Occasionally, off-service Trauma or Medical ICU patients may be assigned. The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2, though patients may occasionally be tripled with downgrade orders. CNA staffing on this unit is not consistent. Support within the department includes a supervisor, stroke response nurse, clinical educator, and charge nurse. There is round-the-clock availability of respiratory therapists, intensivists, and NPs/PAs for emergency situations as part of the neurocritical care team. Must possess strong technical skills and be experienced with various needed equipment. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) is required. The schedule includes every other weekend and the expectation to work 75% of holidays. Flexibility for the nurses is encouraged, but any time off requests must be approved by management. The unit promotes a culture of teamwork and retention, aiming to provide the best care for patients while supporting staff development. Discussions about schedule and other unit-related expectations will occur during the onboarding phase.
