Position Summary

The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), monitoring reportable conditions, educating employees on infection prevention practices, and developing policies and procedures that support a comprehensive infection prevention and control program. The IP ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, including those established by CMS, CDC, OSHA, FDA, and The Joint Commission.

This position collaborates with clinical and administrative teams to implement evidence-based infection prevention strategies, conduct surveillance activities, analyze data, and provide education throughout the organization. The Infection Preventionist reports directly to the Infection Prevention & Control Manager and works closely with the Performance Improvement team.

Key Responsibilities Infection Prevention & Control Program
  • Support the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Infection Prevention and Control Program.
  • Develop and maintain infection prevention policies and procedures in accordance with CDC, OSHA, FDA, APIC, CMS, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Conduct infection risk assessments and recommend evidence-based prevention strategies.
  • Monitor compliance with infection prevention protocols and regulatory requirements.
Surveillance, Data Collection & Reporting
  • Conduct surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and other reportable conditions.
  • Collect, analyze, trend, and interpret infection prevention data.
  • Prepare reports for leadership, committees, regulatory agencies, and the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
  • Monitor infection prevention outcomes and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of infection prevention measures and outcomes in accordance with CMS requirements.
Education & Training
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in infection prevention and control.
  • Develop and deliver infection prevention education for staff, patients, families, and community members.
  • Conduct new employee orientation and annual infection prevention training.
  • Maintain current knowledge of infection prevention standards, regulations, and best practices.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Participate in and co-chair Infection Prevention and Control Committee meetings.
  • Collaborate with clinical departments, leadership teams, and external public health agencies.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and performance improvement activities.
  • Travel to various facilities as needed to conduct assessments, education, and training.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and infection prevention throughout the organization.
