Travel SICU RN – Night Shift Locals Welcomed
Unit: 2E Surgical ICU
Shift: 12-hour nights, 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Unit Size: 16 ICU beds plus 2 procedural beds
Trauma Level: Level II
Charting: Cerner
Unit Overview
High-acuity Surgical ICU serving as a tertiary referral center for complex postoperative, cardiovascular, trauma, neurological, and surgical patients. Nurses must be comfortable managing critically ill patients, titratable drips, invasive monitoring, and rapid changes in patient condition.
Typical Ratios
- 1:2 for standard ICU patients
- 1:1 for higher-acuity patients, including CRRT, immediate post-op hearts, massive transfusion, and organ procurement cases
- 1:3 for patients downgraded to Med Surg or floor status
Required Experience
- Recent high-acuity SICU or comparable ICU experience
- Experience caring for complex surgical and cardiovascular patients
- Must independently interpret and document cardiac rhythms
- Must be comfortable titrating vasoactive, sedative, anticoagulant, and insulin infusions
Experience with CRRT, IABP, Impella, or ECMO is preferred but not required.
Required Certifications
- AHA BLS
- AHA ACLS
- NIHSS
- Preferred: TNCC
Staffing and Support
- Charge Nurse available every shift
- Charge Nurse is ideally without an assignment but may take patients based on census and staffing
- Nursing House Supervisor available 24/7
- Intensivist in-house 24/7
- Respiratory Therapy available in the ICU 24/7
- One Nursing Assistant typically supports the unit on day shift
- Nursing Assistant coverage is not typical on nights
Scheduling Requirements
- Every other weekend required
- Every other holiday required
- Additional weekend or holiday shifts may be available
Floating
Travelers may float in the following order based on hospital needs:
- MICU
- Patient observer assignments elsewhere in the hospital, including suicide precautions or BiPAP safety observation
Additional Policies
- Facility may cancel up to 12 hours during a 13-week assignment
- Local candidates are those residing within 80 miles of the facility
