Job Title: Registered Nurse - Emergency Room Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evening/Night Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 3 years License: Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, PALS Must-Have: Experience in a fast-paced emergency room setting Description: The emergency room has 21 beds. Fast track is staffed with mid-level practitioners and LPNs. Certifications required include BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NIHSS. Patient ratios are 1 to 4, increasing to 1 to 2 for ICU patients. The charting system is Cerner. There is a charge nurse who serves as shift manager and resource nurse. Nurse aides and emergency department technicians are either EMTs or aides from other units. Weekend requirements include 4 shifts in a 4-week schedule. Weekend shifts are Friday and Saturday for nights and Saturday and Sunday for days. Holiday requirements include 1 major and 1 minor holiday. Scrub color is navy blue. If wearing a scrub jacket, it must also be navy. Undershirts must be navy, white, or black. Television equipment is Philips. Ventilators are available. There are hospitalists or intensivists in-house. There is a respiratory team available 24/7. Pharmacy services are available 24/7 with an Omnicell system. Shifts are 12 hours with self-scheduling, finalized by management for balance. Block scheduling is not permitted. Floating may occur between two facilities. Prior notice of 2 hours is required if floated before a shift. Mid-shift floating may also happen. Both facilities are located 6.5 miles apart. If placed on standby or call, staff must report within 30 minutes. Floor-specific training includes two shifts at the primary campus and one shift at the other campus. Common diagnoses include typical emergency room patients. Some days may involve medical-surgical tele holds in the emergency room. Emergency room nurses are expected to care for these patients. This facility is a Primary Stroke Center. "5150 psych holds" are rarely held longer than 12 hours. The Mobile Evaluation Team (MET) is utilized for evaluations. Patient volumes can vary significantly, from 115 to 175 patients in a single day. This role is a primary job and will not accommodate additional work schedules. Teamwork is essential in this environment. The cancellation policy allows cancellation of up to 4 shifts over a 13-week assignment. Charting is conducted through the Cerner system.
