The RN provides care to these patients via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources within the philosophy of the institution. Essential responsibilities and duties include performing all tasks required by the unit specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care is essential to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. Completing initial assessments upon patient admissions and developing appropriate plans of care in accordance with unit standards based on patient and family needs is required. Implementation of the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures is essential. Modifications of the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation are necessary. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others directly and privately when necessary helps to resolve issues. Offering constructive feedback assists in the professional development of peers. Conferring with colleagues to expand the knowledge base is encouraged. Identifying personal learning needs and taking the initiative to begin appropriate solutions is expected. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is a necessity. Department specific functions include implementing procedures and theories specific to emergency department nursing. Patient assessments are performed, and care plans are developed in collaboration with providers, family, and patients. Execution of the plan of care and nursing interventions is required. The RN is responsible for patient and staff safety through appropriate nursing interventions, adhering to safety standards and correcting/reporting safety hazards. Collaboration with staff, visitors, and families promotes a healthy and healing work environment. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records/documentation is essential.
