Job Title: ER Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Day, Evening Days/Midshift Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in an emergency room setting License: State license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS or ENPC, TNS or TNCC, NIHSS Must-Have: Emergency nursing experience, flexibility with shift start times, and moderate sedation experience Description: Provide emergency care to the community, with a focus on non-trauma cases. The facility is Stemi/Stroke ready and has a cath lab available depending on the day and hours. The emergency department consists of 24 beds. There is no separate fast track area; patient flow is intermixed in the department. There is a dedicated triage area, but travelers typically will not be placed in triage roles. Patients in the emergency department are intermixed with those in a holding area. The emergency nurses are responsible for caring for all patients, including those in behavioral health safe rooms. In-house security is available 24/7 and is often present in the emergency department. On average, the department treats 60-80 patients within a 24-hour period. Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:4-5, adjusted according to staffing and patient acuity. The department requires certifications in BLS, ACLS, PALS or ENPC, TNS or TNCC, and NIHSS. Common diagnoses include respiratory viruses, minor injuries, myocardial infarction, and motor vehicle accidents, as well as care for neonates to geriatrics. Nurses in this setting may manage patients longer depending on varying circumstances, and they will see a wide range of cases. Experience with all critical care drips is required. There is a physician available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and during night shifts, a physician is present from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. based on patient load. A house supervisor is available 24/7 to manage operations, and a charge nurse is present during the day shift to support staff. Emergency department technicians assist with tasks such as EKGs, blood draws, wound care, vitals, and patient transport. Respiratory therapy is available on-site and may assist as needed; nurses have the capability to perform some treatments. A monitoring technician supervises patients in the emergency department. Imaging services are connected to the emergency department, facilitating patient transport. Blood draws may be conducted by both technicians and nurses. Shifts are typically 12 hours, with various start times required for nursing and support staff. Weekend work is expected every other week or as needed by the unit. Holiday coverage is rotating among staff to meet operational needs. There is no call or standby requirement. Staff may be required to float to other units, providing assistance based on experience. Professional scrubs are required. Orientation will include a combination of shifts and procedures to introduce staff to the department.
