The facility treats and transfers patients experiencing STEMIs, strokes, and traumas. The emergency room has 14 beds, including one trauma/resuscitation room. There is a separate triage area for busy times. Typically, patients check in and are placed directly in rooms for care. Patients may intermingle within the ER area. There are separate psych/seclusion rooms available for patient safety. Security personnel are on-site 24/7 but not housed in the emergency room. On average, the department treats 40-50 patients daily. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4. Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and ENPC. Common patient diagnoses range from pediatrics to geriatrics. Common conditions treated include hospice cases, codes, strokes, STEMIs, abdominal pain, chest pain, and respiratory issues. Experience in independent practice is acceptable. Staffing consists of one physician available 24/7 and a midlevel provider from noon to 10 PM. A charge nurse is present on every shift and does not take patient assignments. House supervisors are available by phone for additional support. Certified Nursing Assistants and unit clerks are available for vital sign checks and administrative duties 24/7. Respiratory therapists are on-site 24/7 for various procedures and assessments. Respiratory equipment includes everything from nasal cannulas to ventilators. Nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips on SpaceLab monitors. Imaging services include X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound. Both phlebotomists and registered nurses perform lab draws. Shift scheduling is based on a modified self-scheduling system. Travel staff may sign up for shifts to help fill the schedule. Shifts rotate every six weeks, with an emphasis on grouping night shifts together. There are weekend and holiday shift requirements based on departmental needs. Scrub colors are not specified but must be clean and professional. Unit-specific orientation consists of one shift in addition to general orientation. This department fosters a positive culture within a small campus environment.
