This includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers. Responsibilities include dispensing and administering medications. Assisting Licensed Independent Providers in examinations and treatment of patients is also part of the role. The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. Performing technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure is required. Appropriate nursing skills will be applied in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. Attendance during sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents is necessary. Preparing a list of inmates/residents to be examined and preparing the examining room and equipment is part of the job. Operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting as required by applicable policies and procedures are essential functions. The RN will call Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and manage other emergencies. Examination and assessment of new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries is required. Referring inmates/residents to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities based on their condition is necessary. Emergency procedures will be performed as needed, and Licensed Independent Providers will be notified for treatment orders. Coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and addressing their needs is part of the responsibilities. Monitoring inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate is expected. Providing guidance, supervision, and monitoring nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff is required. Maintaining good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies is essential. Utilizing established corporate and facility policies in decision-making while using independent judgment is vital. Regular evaluation of medical services provided to prevent inappropriate use or duplication is required. Maintaining security and confidentiality of all medical records is mandatory. Assisting in the review of medical files to ensure documentation of services provided is necessary. Closely monitoring potential catastrophic illnesses is a critical task. Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed is expected. Complying with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is required. Observing and recording inmate/resident behavior is part of the role. Inspecting the medical unit for potential contraband and securely storing or safely disposing of supplies and equipment is necessary. Providing health counseling and education on an individual or group basis is encouraged. Assisting in preparing and maintaining various standard records, reports, and logs is part of the job responsibilities. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal documents is required. Processing and responding to lawsuits, and attending court hearings if necessary, are responsibilities of the role. Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing required medical services efficiently is expected. Preparing and disseminating safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures is a critical task. Taking appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies is mandatory.
