This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment. Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their education and licensure. Attends sick calls to prepare a list of individuals to be examined and prepare examining rooms and equipment. Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures. Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries. Refers individuals to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facility based on their conditions. Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. Monitors inmate/resident hospitalizations for appropriate early releases. Provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintains a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies. Utilizes established policies and procedures in decision-making while applying sound independent judgment. Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services. Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. Monitors potential catastrophic illnesses closely. Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary, as directed. Complies with applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. Observes and records inmate/resident behavior. Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment. Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required. Prepares and maintains a variety of standard narrative, statistical, and operational records, reports, and logs. Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures, regulations, and documents. Processes and responds to lawsuits and attends court hearings when necessary. Facilitates the accreditation of the medical program by providing required, approved, and appropriate medical services. Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures. Takes appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
