Summary: The CVOR Registered Nurse provides both direct and supportive nursing care to patients undergoing cardiovascular surgical procedures. This role includes assisting with intraoperative monitoring, ensuring patient stability throughout surgery, and working closely with the surgical team to promote optimal outcomes. Responsibilities include verifying that all surgical instruments and equipment are sterile and operational, supporting safe patient positioning and draping, and coordinating care during the immediate post-operative phase. Key Responsibilities: Maintain competency in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgical procedures, including both open and closed heart surgeries Prepare the cardiovascular operating room in advance of procedures, ensuring readiness for the patient and surgical team Gather and organize necessary equipment, supplies, medications, and implants, confirming availability and proper function Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and other team members to provide coordinated, high-quality care Reference surgical preference cards to align setup and workflow with surgeon-specific requirements Position patients safely using approved techniques and devices to prevent injury and allow optimal surgical access Participate in Universal Protocol and surgical timeouts to verify correct patient, procedure, and surgical site Manage and document surgical specimens accurately to preserve diagnostic integrity Coordinate post-operative care, including thorough patient handoff to recovery personnel Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care throughout the perioperative period until transfer to the next level of care Maintain strict adherence to sterile technique and infection control practices during procedures Respond promptly and effectively to intraoperative emergencies, including cardiac events Perform additional duties within scope of practice as assigned Follow all facility safety standards, infection prevention policies, and regulatory requirements Required Skills and Qualifications: Strong critical thinking skills, dedication to service excellence, and effective communication abilities Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English Ability to interpret written instructions, follow verbal directions, and use computer systems as needed Physical ability to remain stationary for extended periods, move throughout the operating room, and lift or handle equipment weighing 50–100 lbs, including pushing, pulling, and bending Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team while maintaining professionalism and a positive attitude Fine motor skills and manual dexterity required for assisting with surgical procedures and handling instruments Capacity to manage frequent interactions and high-pressure situations while meeting deadlines Ability to function independently or with minimal supervision when appropriate Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and maintain sustained attention to detail Adequate vision and communication skills necessary for safe and effective performance of duties
