Description: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Nurse for a 10-bed ICU unit. Requires training to care for immediate post-operative open heart patients from day one. The role is in a hospital with 36 licensed inpatient beds and 10 ICU beds. The organization is expanding cardiac services and caring for higher acuity patients, necessitating critical care-trained nurses. The nurse receives direction from providers, charge nurse, ICU director, and CNO. The nurse gives direction to LPNs, CNAs, housekeeping staff, and dietary staff. Works cooperatively with providers, healthcare professionals, and allied health staff. The role includes providing care to hemodynamically stable or predictably unstable patients in a cardiac medical-surgical unit. Duties involve providing physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural support to patients. Anticipated patient populations include pediatrics, pre and post-PCI care, pacemaker care, revascularization, carotid endarterectomy, thoracotomy, CHF, COPD, DKA, renal failure, DVT, PE, and sepsis, among others. Staff may expect patients in relative stability while recognizing that diagnoses may require skilled assessment and intervention for potential deterioration. Required to operate advanced medical equipment, including central lines, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, continuous bladder irrigation, A-lines, multiple IVs, and patients requiring short-term ventilation support. Provides care for both general medical and surgical patients on the inpatient unit. Must assess and implement established policies and procedures with minimal supervision. Acts as a clinical leader and assists with precepting staff. Provides direct care for patients from admission to discharge, including discharge planning. Knowledge of advanced nursing principles and procedures, with critical care and CVICU experience preferred. Skills required include the use of multiple IV pumps and the ability to operate advanced medical equipment. Basic cardiac telemetry and EKG interpretation skills are necessary. Recent critical care experience is important.
