Supervises and delegates care responsibilities to ancillary personnel within their scope of practice. Responsible for critical care nursing knowledge and skills, including care of patients with multi-system failure requiring ventilation and hemodynamic monitoring. Provides appropriate nursing interventions in stable and emergent patient situations. Competent in all routine nursing skills including medication administration, intravenous therapy, care and maintenance of indwelling catheters, and safe use of medical equipment in the critical care setting. Understands and follows chain of command as per policy. Accurately interprets ECG rhythms and manages care during life-threatening emergencies. Verifies alarm settings with Monitor Technician according to policy. Demonstrates knowledge of lead functions and application, and makes recommendations for monitoring based on patient presentation. Demonstrates knowledge and skill regarding the care and management of patients requiring ICP and ventriculostomy monitoring. Proficient in assessment and intervention for changes in neurological symptoms. Demonstrates knowledge and skill regarding patients requiring Pulmonary Artery Monitoring and Arterial Pressure Monitoring. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the care of patients requiring mechanical ventilation and other ventilatory support devices. Knowledgeable about the principles of multi-system alteration and its impact on physiological functions and mental processing in adult and elder populations. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with healthcare team members. Educates patients and/or their families regarding care, using appropriate teaching methods. Completes legible, accurate, and timely documentation of all nursing care provided, including patient responses to medications and treatments. Performs necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Commitment to the safety and wellbeing of associates and patients is required.
