Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Neuro Med-Surg night shift position requiring dedicated neuro unit and Level 1 trauma experience.

Details

  • Work in the Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit of a 54-bed hospital department
  • Care for patients with stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience diagnoses, with occasional medical overflow
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights
  • Nurse aide/PCT support at ratios of 1:9-10 on days/evenings and 1:10-12 on nights
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor on-site 24/7, with charge nurse only taking assignments when short-staffed
  • House-wide telemetry monitoring using Phillips monitors, so RNs are not required to read their own strips
  • Occasional use of high-flow oxygen equipment for stable COVID patients
  • RNs required to titrate drips, including heparin gtt based on PTT
  • Uses EPIC EMR
  • 12-hour night shifts on a single shift schedule
  • Required to work every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and every other holiday
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Floating required within the general unit float pool, with limited floating outside the unit only for urgent needs and matching skill competency

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
  • Heparin drip titration experience required
  • Previous travel nursing experience required

Additional Information

  • Provide direct nursing care to neuroscience patients, including drip titration and monitoring
  • Unit-specific orientation consists of 2 days covering computer systems and unit specifics with an educator, plus 1 day of patient care with a preceptor
  • No specific scrub color required, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and only ear piercings are permitted
  • Local candidates accepted, with local rate applying to clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility
  • Negative drug screen required for all panels
  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
