Job Title: Laboratory Technologist Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Medical Laboratory Technician, Clinical Laboratory Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evenings with rotating weekends Hours per Shift: 8 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Certification/registration or certification/registry eligible as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician required Certifications: National certification (AMT or ASCP) required Must-Have: Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques of medical technology Description: The Laboratory Technologist works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager. Responsible for performing laboratory tests and accurately reporting results to the physician. Tests are used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. Assists in the general operation of the laboratory and quality assurance programs. Responsible for the maintenance of laboratory equipment. Independent judgment and professional education are required. After probation is satisfactorily completed, the Laboratory Technologist becomes a general supervisor for waived, moderate, and high complexity testing. Adheres to the organization's Mission and Values. Performs tasks, duties, and complex tests in all areas of the laboratory. Areas include hematology, immunohematology, immunology, bacteriology, microscopy, routine chemistry, and therapeutic drug monitoring. Follows established laboratory protocols and procedures. Performs phlebotomies including arterial punctures, capillary punctures, and venipunctures as appropriate for the patient. Applies age-specific criteria as appropriate during procedures. Processes specimens utilizing established protocols and technical knowledge. Calibrates, standardizes, and maintains instruments following established procedures. Performs quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting protocols. Ensures proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures. Prepares and maintains reagent supplies necessary to perform tests. Validates and reports results of tests accurately and in a timely manner. Assists in the maintenance and development of laboratory policy and procedural manuals. Assists with the orientation and teaching of students and new employees. Researches and develops new procedures as assigned. Follows established safety practices, including biohazards and infection control. Promotes effective working relationships and works effectively as part of a department. Facilitates the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Attends all in-service education as required by policy and national credentialing agency requirements. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees. Ensures a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Seeks out needed information by staying informed and involved in departmental communications. Ensures reliable attendance and punctuality, including observing appropriate break times. Extends a scheduled shift when necessary to meet patient demands. Performs duties in a safe manner, in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
