Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position at a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Tele RN experience and a GA or compact RN license.

Details

  • Work in a 35-bed Med/Surg Telemetry unit within a 637-bed Level 1 Trauma, academic teaching hospital with a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center
  • Patient population includes adults with acute or chronic illnesses, post-op surgical patients, and those with common med-surg comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, CHF, infections, and electrolyte imbalances
  • RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4–6, supported by LPNs and 2–3 CNAs per shift
  • Specialized skills utilized include trach care, chest tube management, glucommander, insulin drips, heparin drips, cardiac telemetry monitoring, IV insertion, central line management, and wound care
  • EMR: Epic (experience required)
  • Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing, Philips monitors, Glucommander, PCA pain management systems, bladder scanners, and portable vital sign monitors
  • Central Telemetry Unit provides cardiac monitoring support
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a, 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation of 6 shifts per 6-week schedule
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • Floating required to all adult med-surg and telemetry units within the facility

Requirements

  • Active RN license — GA or compact license required
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) interpretation competency required — candidates must pass an EKG competency exam
  • ACLS preferred but not required
  • Medical-Surgical national certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry RN experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Experience at a Level 1 Trauma or academic teaching hospital preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment skills including telemetry interpretation, IV starts, central line management, and post-op monitoring
  • At least 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

Additional Information

  • CNA support includes vital signs, glucose checks, patient bathing, feeding, ambulation, turning, and hourly rounding; a dedicated hospital Transport Team handles patient transport
  • Unit secretary is available on-unit from 7a–11p; house-wide call secretary covers 11p–7a
  • Charge nurse, respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and intensivist are available 24/7
  • PICC team available; nurses are responsible for draws from central venous lines (CVLs); most units use lab-collect phlebotomy
  • Resource team and discharge nurses float to all units as needed
  • Orientation consists of 1 day of facility-level orientation with educational modules followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Travelers are expected to work 75% of holidays
  • Scrub color for RNs is navy blue
  • Free parking is available around campus
