Job Title: Vascular Technologist, Echo Technologist Profession: Diagnostic Imaging Specialty: Vascular Technologist, Echo Technologist Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Friday - Monday Hours per Shift: 10 hours Experience: Minimum 6 months preferred License: Meets requirements for registry Certifications: American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography registry eligible Must-Have: Six months experience preferred working in the performance of ultrasound Description: Under the supervision of the ultrasound supervisor. Assists the radiologist and other physicians in achieving scans and films. Aims to achieve a diagnosis concerning patients receiving an ultrasound exam or sonogram. Provides patient care activities for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. Responsible for the proper utilization of Radiology Information System. Participates in and implements age-specific care and interaction. Attends departmental orientation and annual in-service education for age-specific training. Awareness of hospital performance improvement projects and interactions for improvement. Works established schedule and clocks in at the appropriate time. Completes all assigned work, tasks, and duties before clocking out and leaving. Provides basic patient care and comfort. Anticipates patient needs and establishes rapport with the patient and family. Explains procedures to patients and families, gaining their trust. Instructs patients on positioning and breathing techniques to optimize exams. Identifies life-threatening situations and carries out emergency care as allowed. Transports patients to and from the ultrasound department as needed. Confirms information accuracy and charges exams using the correct CP#. Obtains, reviews, and correlates pertinent patient history, physical exam and supporting clinical data. Facilitates optimal diagnostic results. Performs ultrasound exams utilizing proper established procedures at all times. Performs verbal, written, and physical examinations to obtain all information pertinent to the ultrasound exam. Recognizes significant clinical information and historical facts that may affect the sonographic examination. Performs diagnostic procedures by producing, assessing, evaluating, and interpreting ultrasound images and related data. Acquires and evaluates data, exercising discretion and judgment in clerical examination performance. Demonstrates excellent knowledge in all specialized areas of ultrasound. Interprets ultrasound exams to achieve optimum quality. Provides interpreting physicians with an oral or written summary of technical findings. Performs clerical skills to document and record all statistical information and record keeping requirements. Logs on and retrieves patient information in PACS. Adds important information in PACS to assist with the diagnosis of an exam. Sends images from PACS to the appropriate destination. Maintains ultrasound log containing patient information and exam data on every scan performed. Performs quality assurances and infection control programs. Ensures safe and effective equipment operations, including the inspection for electrical and mechanical hazards. Evaluates and documents equipment performance using acoustic test objects. Documents equipment performance, service, maintenance, and configuration changes. Contacts field service engineers for repairs or maintenance of ultrasound equipment as needed. Maintains infection control and uses universal precautions. Completes handwashing and cleaning and disinfection of equipment. Uses sterile covers for transducer and cable when appropriate. Utilizes gloves and other barrier technology as required. Maintains a daily log for testing and changing of disinfectant for submersible equipment. Changes disinfectant for submersible equipment according to protocol and daily log. Schedules to be on call and takes rotation on call as scheduled. Carries a beeper to be available 24 hours a day. Responds in an efficient and timely manner. Maintains ultrasound labs, stocking them with equipment, linen, and other necessary items. Disposes of linen in the correct containers. Employs professional judgment and discretion. Adheres to HIPPA rules and regulations. Protects patient rights and privacy. Confirms two forms of patient identification before performing an ultrasound examination. Performs within the scope of practice for ultrasound. Adheres to the professional code of conduct. Maintains competency of profession. Attends continuing education to reinforce and update knowledge base. Working Conditions: Sitting for long periods of time. Must be able to work in stressful situations. Exposure to diseases and foul odors. Exposure to hazardous chemicals. Physical Requirements: Must be able to utilize hands to manipulate transducer during exams. Must be able to use a calculator, write, and use a computer keyboard. Must be able to lift and move case supplies weighing approximately 10-25 pounds. Assist in transferring patients from wheelchairs. Must be able to pull and/or push equipment weighing up to 100 pounds on wheel casters. Must be able to stand for approximately 2 hours per day for procedures.
