Job Title: Surgical Technician Profession: Technician Specialty: Operating Room Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 8 hours or 10 hours Experience: Minimum Years of Experience: Not Specified Preferred Experience: Previous Operating Room experience, Previous Surgical Technologist experience License: Required License: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Required Certifications: BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross) Must-Have: CVOR and Cardiothoracic experience (CABG, Valve replacements, VATS, Robotic chest procedures) Description: Under general direction, observes and practices sterile technique and maintains asepsis. Anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed. Actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes operating room supplies conservatively and operates as a team member of the operating room staff. Follows infection control policies and procedures. Demonstrates expertise in surgical scrub technique. Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intra-operatively. Assists the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing of instruments during procedures. Maintains an organized operative field at all times. Keeps instruments clean and in their proper place. Keeps an accurate record of sponge, tape, needle, dissector, and instrument counts. Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment in accordance with preference cards. Identifies conflicts or problems and cares for instruments post-case. Provides a safe surgical environment for patients. Identifies potential hazards to the surgeon and assisting staff. Displays knowledge of potential hazards within the operating room. Utilizes experienced staff as a resource. Acts as a resource for new personnel. Assists in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon. Handles and identifies specimens according to policy. Expedites the effective and efficient turnaround of the operating room between cases. Takes rotating call duty. May perform additional responsibilities as requested. May be asked to work in general operating room if cardiothoracic volume is low. Call shifts may vary, including weekends.
