Job Title: Cardiac Sonographer 1 Profession: Cardiac Sonographer Specialty: Cardiac Sonographer Duration: 13 weeks Shift: AM Hours per Shift: 8 Experience: Minimum 3 years of working experience; Level I Trauma experience required. License: None specified Certifications: BLS (AHA Only), RCS or RDCS Must-Have: Independent and self-sufficient Description: The Cardiac Sonographer 1 performs basic to intermediate cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients. Procedures include transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress tests, which are used to diagnose and assess cardiac abnormalities. General duties include preparing equipment, prepping patients, and explaining procedures. The role also involves reviewing images, reporting findings, and analyzing patient clinical history. This analysis helps to identify the purpose of the examination and to frame the clinical questions that the examination is intended to answer. The Sonographer expands the examination as necessary to address these clinical questions. Essential Functions: Performs basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques. Makes the necessary measurements required for interpretation to obtain accurate, high-quality results. Identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities, extending the scope of examination appropriately. May assist physicians in procedure rooms and operating rooms by performing echocardiographic studies. Assists in performing transesophageal studies with a cardiologist, calculating appropriate measurements and sterilizing the probe. Prepares patients for procedures and obtains clinical history, including cardiac-related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data. Records statistics and performs daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment. Reports all malfunctions as appropriate. Acts as a resource to other staff, physicians, and students regarding equipment and procedures. Works closely with the cardiac sonographer quality coordinator to ensure quality processes and protocols are adhered to. Assists with accreditation activities as delegated. Implements protocols as new technology evolves and ensures that echocardiography standards are maintained. Key Success Factors: Knowledge and ability to apply complex sonographic principles, instrumentation, and techniques. Understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology. Ability to explain the purpose of echocardiographic examinations and answer patients' questions. Knowledge of approved clinical protocols for each type of cardiovascular ultrasound examination. Familiarity with infection control procedures. Understanding of relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality and privacy. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with healthcare providers, including other sonographers and nurses. Knowledge of medical terminology. Skilled in the utilization of computers and medical equipment.
