Job Title: Patient Care Technician Profession: Patient Care Technician Specialty: Adolescent Psychiatry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 8H Nights Hours per Shift: 37.5 hours per week Experience: Minimum of 1 year in psychiatric and pediatric clinical experience License: Yes Certifications: BLS, Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A) Must-Have: - BLS Certification - PCT Certification - Experience in psychiatric settings Description: The unit serves patients ages 5-17, experiencing a variety of mental health conditions. Common diagnoses include ADHD, depression, mood disorders, autism, and substance abuse history. The average length of stay is 3 weeks, with some cases extending longer. Focus on connecting with patients through conversation and engagement, rather than physical contact. This unit rarely uses physical restraints, with policies covered during orientation. Patient Care Technicians are responsible for directly observing patient care and completing rounds every 15 minutes. Additional responsibilities include EKGs, phlebotomy, and assisting with patient activities. Charge nurses and nursing care coordinators are available 24 hours to support staff and assist with patient assignments. Weekend and holiday work is required, with expectations for every other weekend and one major holiday shift. Travelers may float to other psychiatric units as needed, but the preference is to remain in this unit. The unit employs specific scrub colors for staff, with PCTs wearing eggplant. Excessive call-ins may lead to employment consequences. All staff are expected to adhere to unit policies and engage in training to enhance their skills in de-escalation and patient interaction.
