Position Summary

The Transportation Supervisor supervises and coordinates the activities of all St. Mary’s Food Bank (SMFB) drivers, to include Class A, Class B, and others hired to drive any and all of SMFBA’s fleet. The fleet includes buses, refrigerated straight trucks, dry box storage trucks, and semi tractors.

Essential Functions

• Knows, understands, and lives the Company Values, setting the proper example for all drivers.
• Establishes and maintains excellent communications with the drivers, creating a positive and rewarding working environment, and keeping drivers in tune with St. Mary’s Food Bank and how their role contributes to the mission.
• Ensures that drivers maintain high standards of customer service and professionalism while representing St. Mary’s Food Bank.
• Responsible for positive driver recognition as well as driver discipline.
• Maintains all DOT required records (i.e. CDL driver files) and logs and remains abreast of all new regulations to keep the company in compliance.
• Responsible for upkeep of all company vehicles to ensure Safety, Fueling, DOT and Appearance standards are met.
• Schedules staff & temp services as needed and processes payroll documents accordingly.
• Writes driver yearly and 90-day evaluations.
• Working with the Transportation Manager and HR, hires drivers to fill openings.
• Updates and maintains all appropriate paperwork related to transportation and fleet accountability.
• May be required to drive a truck if needed to complete a pick-up or delivery.
• Responsible for the daily maintenance of Routing Software and delivery schedule.
• Responsible for maintaining excellent relations with food donors/merchants and individuals, especially regarding transportation issues.
• Responsible for filling in for drivers on a regular basis to cover PTO.
• Acts in the capacity of the Transportation Manager, in his absence.
• Responsible for the weekly and monthly training of CDL drivers.
• Updates and maintains all appropriate paperwork related to the St. Mary’s Food Bank Fleet and vehicle inspection reports, ensuring D.O.T. Rules and Regulations are being adhered to by all the drivers.
• Complete daily, weekly and monthly reports assigned.
• Assists in other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent
• Minimum five years of transportation experience to include 1-year fleet maintenance experience and truck dispatching.
• Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
• Understanding of Microsoft Office and Excel software, Commercial Driver License Requirements and DOT Rules and Regulations.

Physical Demands/Environment Factors

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts,
  • Ability to lift and carry food boxes weighing up to 60 lbs. occasionally throughout a shift
  • Ability to grasp and handle objects.
  • May require extensive sitting if driving to/from assigned food source, donor, and partner agency locations, or to pick up a driver from a location
  • Work at a height of up to 40 ft (where applicable)
  • Able to tolerate loud noises in the warehouse setting,
  • Needs adequate visual acuity
  • Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
  • May require off-site travel.
  • Required PPE – Foot Protection that complies with ANSI or ASTM rating (Steel toe or composite toe with slip resistant sole)”. After completion of 90 days post hired date employees will be eligible for a shoe voucher to SMFB preferred shoe vendor.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Required: High School or GED.
  • Required: CDL, Good driving record, Current DOT Medical Certification.
  • Solid level of interpersonal skills to lead and work effectively with others.
  • Excellent knowledge of D.O.T. and CDL requirements and record keeping.
  • Strong communication and supervisory skills in a team and fleet environment.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical concepts.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Planning and organization skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Forklift certified
  • Knowledge of basic safe food handling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Previous food distribution and non-profit work experience
