Transportation Lead Technician

Job Title: Lead Technician Reports to: Director of Transportation & Fleet Manager Dept./Campus: Transportation Classification: Non-Exempt

Primary Purpose: Responsible for on-site leadership of vehicle mechanics and mechanic assistants. Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.

Qualifications: Education/Certification

  • Clear and valid Texas commercial drivers license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement
  • ASE Masters certificate or equivalent preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and physical exam
  • Ability to access and use service materials
  • Ability to operate bus
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others

Experience

  • Three or more years of experience in bus maintenance and repair preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Maintenance and Repair

  • Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventive maintenance records.
  • Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, and cooling systems.
  • Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs.
  • Establish preventative maintenance and care schedules.
  • Notify the Director of Transportation and Fleet Manager of vehicles and equipment that are worn out or obsolete.
  • Make recommendations for purchase and monitor the effectiveness of diagnostic software.
  • Assign work to vehicle mechanics and mechanic assistants and inspect completed work for quality.
  • Consult with other mechanics to help resolve repair problems and help train mechanics and mechanic assistants.

Purchasing and Receiving

  • Order and pick up or arrange for delivery of parts as needed.
  • Contact vendors to check on availability of parts and supplies.
  • Ensure parts catalogs and other resource information are current.

Safety

  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are clean and in safe operating condition.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Assist with investigations of school bus accidents, student safety violations, and participate in post-accident review processes.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Other

  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
  • Conduct regular parts and fuel usage inventories and identify and resolve any deficiencies.
  • Operate buses and vehicles as needed.

  • Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
  • Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
  • Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.
