The engineer will have experience in Bridge Design, Bridge Inspection, and/or Bridge Repair. This position plays a key role in supporting the district's bridge program, including bridge design, evaluating bridge conditions, developing repair plans, reviewing design documents, and coordinating with Area Offices and maintenance sections. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives and handle issues independently.Essential DutiesAssist with structural review of complex forming, falsework and erection details.Perform complex structural analysis of bridge designs.Assist with recommendations to the Motor Carrier Division for routing of overload vehicles.Develop specifications for special bridge design details and projects.Perform complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.Answer technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintain bridge inspection data; analyze data and provide summaries.Ensure compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.Inspect, evaluate and analyze bridges and related structures with appraisal and condition ratings or recommended for closure.Recommend bridge replacement, rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.Review designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.Design highly complex bridge projects and perform specialized design.Inspect structures for impact damage and construction problems; design emergency shoring to prevent collapse of damaged structures.Rate and monitor load‑carrying capacities of bridges.Review shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.Coordinate consultants and monitor related contracts.Maintain a critical bridge list and coordinate with the Bridge Division and other district staff on critical findings.Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.Minimum QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science; higher degree accepted by TX PELS.Valid driver's license and ability to drive a state vehicle.Licensed Professional Engineer (in any U.S. state).If performing underwater bridge inspections: Open Water Diver certification.For Bridge Inspection: completed comprehensive training based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of hire.Professional engineers licensed in another state must obtain a Texas license within six (6) months of hire and sign an agreement.CompetenciesStandards and specifications for bridge and other transportation structuresFatigue and fracture mechanicsBridge construction and evaluation methods, procedures and regulationsBridge inspection and appraisal methods and proceduresFoundation analysis programsContract development and oversightPlanning, coordinating, and handling multiple projects to meet deadlinesPhysical Requirements and Working ConditionsLift up to 20 lbs; frequently lift or carry objects 10 lbs or more.Repetitive motion: substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.Exposure to environmental conditions; subject to weather, moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat or chemicals.Tasks requiring kneeling, bending legs, reaching, standing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing.This job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.Drug TestingMust pass a drug test prior to employment.
