Transmission Planning Engineer (Engineer III or Engineer IV)
Location: Alvin, TX
Salary Range: $95,000 – $180,000 (Depending on Experience)

A leading Texas electric transmission and distribution utility is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to join its Transmission Planning organization. This role supports system reliability, long?term planning, and infrastructure development through advanced engineering analysis and project coordination.

This organization owns and operates mission?critical transmission infrastructure serving hundreds of thousands of customers across Texas and offers engineers long?term stability, meaningful technical challenges, and career growth within a regulated utility environment.

Position Overview
  • Position may be filled at the Engineer III or Engineer IV level
  • Final level, responsibilities, and compensation determined by experience and qualifications
  • On?site role based in Alvin, TX

Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Transmission Planning Engineer plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates engineering work supporting transmission system planning and reliability initiatives. At the senior level, this role also serves as a technical advisor on large, complex, and high?impact projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Engineer III
  • Plan and coordinate engineering work for projects of moderate scope or phases of larger projects
  • Lead or conduct performance, cost, and scheduling studies using established engineering techniques
  • Support operational areas through standard and non?standard engineering practices
  • Communicate engineering analyses, recommendations, and evaluations to internal stakeholders
  • Represent the organization in varied engineering matters
  • Provide technical support to other engineers and operational teams
  • Apply engineering expertise to improve or develop planning standards
  • Provide ongoing technical direction to contractors and company personnel
Engineer IV
  • Lead large, complex, and/or high?profile transmission planning projects
  • Conduct advanced performance, cost, and scheduling evaluations using innovative or modified techniques
  • Serve as a senior technical advisor and consultant to internal teams
  • Identify and resolve broad technical and organizational issues impacting system reliability and company objectives
  • Represent the organization in advanced engineering and planning matters
  • Apply extensive engineering expertise to develop or improve planning standards
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineers and technical staff

Core Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of transmission system planning and power system reliability principles
  • Ability to apply engineering, economic, and decision?analysis techniques to complex system issues
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE, etc.)
  • Ability to translate electrical theory and physics into utility?scale applications
  • Comfortable working in and around high?voltage electrical facilities (up to 345kV)
  • Ability to forecast budgets and evaluate alternatives
  • Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and strong interpersonal skills

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET?accredited institution
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Engineer III:
    • Bachelor’s degree plus 4+ years of engineering experience
    • OR 3+ years with FE/EIT certification
    • OR 3+ years with a Master’s degree

  • Engineer IV:
    • Bachelor’s degree plus 5–7 years of progressive engineering experience
    • Senior?level technical responsibility preferred

Preferred Certifications & Licenses
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • FE/EIT certification preferred (Engineer III)
  • Valid driver’s license meeting company requirements

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Combination of office and field work (majority office?based)
  • Work around high?voltage transmission facilities, office environments, and construction equipment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb, bend, and work at heights
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Compliance & Background Requirements
  • Position may be subject to NERC CIP cybersecurity standards
  • Successful completion of identity verification, criminal background check, and personnel risk assessment required
  • Cybersecurity training required prior to access and annually thereafter
  • Credit check may be required depending on role and location
