Job Title: Transmission Line Engineer

Job Description

This role sits within the transmission department and focuses on the engineering and design of transmission line projects that support utility customers. The Transmission Line Engineer collaborates closely with senior engineers, in-house teams, and client engineers and designers to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective transmission solutions. The position involves full project lifecycle participation, from conceptual design and route selection through construction support and project closeout.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering and design activities related to transmission line design, including engineering analysis, route selection, material acquisition, structural and foundation design, and project and construction management.
  • Prepare comprehensive project construction documents such as plan and profile drawings, detailed design drawings, engineering and material specifications, construction specifications, project schedules, and bills of material.
  • Develop and evaluate project design alternatives and prepare corresponding cost estimates to support decision-making and budget planning.
  • Design new transmission facilities for voltages ranging from 12 kV to 765 kV, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, codes, and customer requirements.
  • Utilize PLS-CADD to model and analyze transmission line design projects, ensuring accurate representations of line routes, structures, and clearances.
  • Lead and participate in contractor bid and construction meetings, helping ensure that all work activities are performed safely, in accordance with plans and established schedules, and in compliance with internal policies, rules, standards, and external regulations.
  • Coordinate effectively with governmental and regulatory agencies and contractors to secure required project permits and approvals.
  • Provide leadership to facilitate timely project completion, including setting measurable work area goals and objectives and guiding the project team toward those goals.
  • Function as a project lead for transmission projects, overseeing technical activities, schedules, and coordination among stakeholders.
  • Coordinate work activities of other team members within the work group and department to ensure successful completion of transmission projects.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and guidance to lower-level engineers and designers to support their professional development and ensure consistent design quality.
  • Initiate corrective actions when transmission or substation project objectives are not being met, including identifying issues, proposing solutions, and implementing changes.
  • Work under the supervision of higher-level engineers while progressively taking on more complex assignments and responsibilities.
  • Conduct occasional site visits to support design validation, construction coordination, and field issue resolution.

Essential Skills

  • Two to five years of experience in utilities working with transmission line design.
  • Two to five years of experience completing engineering projects from start to finish, including planning, design, and implementation.
  • Two to five years of experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for transmission line projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering; a degree from an ABET-accredited program may count toward years of experience.
  • Proficiency in transmission line design, including structural and foundation design and route selection.
  • Hands-on experience using PLS-CADD for transmission line modeling and design.
  • Experience with high-voltage transmission systems and related design considerations.
  • Strong design engineering background in transmission or civil engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills for working with engineers, designers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to lead or coordinate project activities and support project management tasks.
  • Capability to work under the guidance of senior engineers while managing assigned tasks independently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • EIT (Engineer-in-Training) license is desirable but not required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD for preparing and reviewing design drawings.
  • background in civil engineering design, including structures and foundations related to transmission lines.
  • Familiarity with material acquisition processes and construction specifications for transmission projects.
  • Experience participating in contractor bid and construction meetings.
  • Ability to mentor and train junior engineers and designers.
  • Strong analytical skills for evaluating design alternatives and developing cost estimates.
  • Comfort working within a utility or engineering consulting environment focused on transmission projects.

Work Environment

The role is based in a quiet engineering office environment designed to support focused technical work and collaboration. Designers typically share a cubicle with another designer, often a more senior team member, which encourages on-the-job learning and mentorship. The dress code is business casual. Teamwork is highly encouraged and occurs frequently, with engineers and designers working closely together and with client teams to deliver complex transmission projects. The position includes occasional site visits to field locations to support design verification and construction activities.
