Remote Transmission Line Engineer

Position Overview

The Transmission Line Engineer will play a critical role in supporting high‑voltage transmission line projects ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV. This position spans the full project lifecycle-from conceptual design through construction support-and combines detailed engineering, technical leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration. The ideal candidate will have a strong civil or mechanical engineering foundation, although electrical engineers with relevant transmission line experience will also be considered. Experience working with California utilities and a strong understanding of applicable California General Orders governing overhead electric lines is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive engineering deliverables, including calculations, technical specifications, drawings, and construction packages
  • Lead and coordinate design engineers and technical staff to ensure quality deliverables are completed on schedule and within scope
  • Review engineering studies and design documents to ensure technical accuracy, compliance, and constructability
  • Collaborate with contractors, permitting agencies, and cross‑functional teams to support project approvals and execution
  • Provide construction-phase support by resolving design issues and addressing field conditions
  • Apply sound project management principles to maintain high standards of safety, quality, and performance
  • Contribute to multiple power delivery projects, including new transmission lines and system upgrades involving poles and towers
  • Develop transmission line models, route alignments, plan & profile drawings, and structural analyses using industry software
  • Integrate survey, GIS, and geotechnical data into design models and foundation solutions
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, engineering codes, and regulatory requirements related to overhead electric lines
  • Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • Participate in knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering team

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in transmission line engineering or related power delivery design

  • Strong experience in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering with experience in transmission structures (poles and towers)

  • Proficiency with the PLS software suite (PLS‑CADD, PLS‑Pole, PLS‑Tower)

  • Experience with:

  • Transmission line modeling and route alignment

  • Plan and profile drawing development

  • Structural analysis of overhead transmission systems

  • Knowledge of:

  • Conductors, hardware assemblies, and structure detailing

  • Bill of materials preparation

  • Assembly, framing, and design drawings for wood, steel, concrete, FRP, and lattice structures (lattice experience preferred)

  • Familiarity with related electrical studies such as EMF, grounding, clearance, fault current, and contamination analysis

  • Experience interpreting geotechnical data for foundation design and embedment calculations

  • Ability to integrate survey and GIS data into design workflows

  • Proficiency in tools such as L‑Pile, MFAD, and Microsoft Office Suite

  • Working knowledge of relevant standards such as ASCE, ACI, IEEE, NESC, RUS, and GO‑95 (or similar)

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience in transmission/structural engineering)
  • Experience working with major California utilities or on California-based transmission projects
  • Exposure to large-scale, multi-region infrastructure projects
  • Interest in pursuing technical specialization or project leadership roles
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative, high-performance engineering environment

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $44.00 - $72.00/hr.
