Trailer Mechanic

Job Summary

The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on company trucks, trailers, and other equipment as assigned. This position helps ensure equipment is maintained in a safe and efficient operating condition to support daily operations. The Trailer Mechanic performs both minor and major repairs, conducts routine inspections and maintenance, maintains shop organization and parts inventory, and works collaboratively with team members to identify and resolve equipment issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform minor and major repairs on trucks, trailers, and other equipment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance services, including inspections, tire rotations, oil changes, and equipment servicing.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and operational issues on trucks and trailers.
  • Perform routine diagnostic testing to identify equipment concerns and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, hydraulic, brake, suspension, and air systems.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain trailers to support safe and reliable operation.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify equipment issues and determine repair solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, maintenance, and parts usage.
  • Maintain parts inventory and ensure shop cleanliness and organization.
  • Keep the maintenance shop, tools, and work areas clean, organized, and safe.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Maintain regular attendance and work cooperatively with supervisors and team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Must be mechanically inclined.
  • Solid understanding of electrical, hydraulic, brake, suspension, and related vehicle systems.
  • Strong understanding of preventative maintenance processes and repair methods.
  • Working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, equipment, and shop machinery.
  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Previous experience with dismounting/mounting, and repair of truck and/or trailer tires?
  • Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, or industrial machinery.
  • Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Experience in transportation, recycling, manufacturing, fleet maintenance, or industrial environments is preferred.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, pull, and move materials and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a maintenance shop, yard, and industrial recycling environment. Regular exposure to moving machinery, trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, noise, vibration, dust, grease, oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids. Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Frequent exposure to mechanical and electrical equipment requiring repair and maintenance. Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe footwear, and other equipment as required.
