Position Summary
The Traffic Technician classification is a two-part career progression model comprised of the following working titles: Traffic Technician I and II.
Traffic Technician I
The Traffic Technician performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks in City streets and traffic infrastructure maintenance.
Traffic Technician II
This position requires a Commercial Driver's License and falls under the Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Rules and Regulations.
The Traffic Technician II may oversee or lead the work of other workers depending on assignment.
This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Traffic Technician I
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: At least six months work experience.
Education and/or experience preferences: Prior experience in street maintenance is preferred.
Traffic Technician II
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: At least six months work experience as a Traffic Technician with the City of Rio Rancho.
Traffic Technician I
Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Drivers License Required Endorsements: None
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Traffic Technician II
Driver's License requirement: Commercial Drivers License Permit Required Endorsements: CDL Class B

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of traffic hardware maintenance, sign repair, and installation; equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices; Federal (OSHA) and state regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of power tools. Understanding how to work safely near and around traffic
Skills: The safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools and work in potentially hazardous areas, around moving equipment and in a variety of work areas. Must be able to use a personal computer or other computerized device to track and maintain inventory of signs or other traffic related equipment or devices.
Abilities: Perform heavy physical exertion under adverse weather conditions; follow written and oral instructions; operate power equipment, including but not limited to, dump trailers, skid steer loaders, bucket truck, attenuator truck, and related equipment as assigned; operate hand tools; operate a motor vehicle; prepare basic written reports, including work orders and maintenance logs; establish and maintain effective, professional relations; communicate effectively with the public and other employees; operate, maintain and repair power tools and small equipment used in the work; comprehend and carry out simple verbal instructions and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s; perform these operations using units of money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with other sections within the Engineering Division and other Public Works Divisions as well as other City Departments to provide for the health, welfare and safety of the traveling public. External: Presents a friendly, courteous image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials.
