Job Title:            Traffic Signal Technician

Supervisor:       Project Manager II / Senior Project Manager

FULL SALARY RANGE: $27.54 - $39.13

ANTICIPATED HIRING SALARY RANGE: $27.54 - $33.34
This is a Full-time/hourly position

About the Role
The Traffic Signal Technician performs highly skilled technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices to support safe, efficient, and reliable traffic flow throughout the City. This role is also integral to emergency response support and may require assisting in areas outside the primary job function when needed and within physical and training capabilities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Test, diagnose, install, and repair electronic equipment and computerized traffic control devices.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections of traffic signal equipment, cabinets, and pole conditions.
  • Troubleshoot circuits using specialized electronic testing tools.
  • Design and install circuitry to modify or enhance equipment performance.
  • Develop and adjust signal timing based on analysis of traffic flow data.
  • Respond to urgent traffic signal malfunctions; direct traffic and coordinate contractor support as needed.
  • Install and maintain controllers, detectors, time clocks, illuminated signs, and other signal equipment.
  • Operate aerial lift trucks, hand tools, and other mechanized equipment; perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions.
  • Install, maintain, and repair streetlights using diagnostic and mechanical tools.
  • Maintain records, prepare reports, track supplies and inventory, and support procurement of materials and equipment.
  • Stay current on emerging traffic signal and control technologies; attend relevant meetings and training.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

What We’re Looking For

Skills & Knowledge

  • Principles and practices of electrical systems, wiring, conduit bending, and solid‑state electronics.
  • Methods and tools used in traffic control installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Understanding of modern traffic signal computer systems and traffic control principles
  • Familiarity with MUTCD guidelines and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and apply independent judgment in troubleshooting.
  • Ability to operate electronic testing equipment and perform work at heights.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to work professionally with staff and the public.

 

Education & Experience

  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices, including streetlights.
  • Education equivalent to an associate’s degree in electronics, electrical engineering, or a related field; a related technical trade school certificate may also qualify.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II certification required; Level III preferred.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions
Work occurs indoors and outdoors with exposure to adverse weather, odors, and potentially hazardous environmental conditions. Duties require a full range of physical movements including climbing, kneeling, crouching, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in high or precarious locations.
