Overview

The Traffic Signal Technician is an entry-level position responsible for performing routine skilled tasks related to the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of all types of traffic signal and street lighting systems and related electrical equipment essential to traffic control. Performs on-call duties on a weekly, rotational basis.

Responsibilities

  • Under close supervision of an IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician (Certified Level I, Il, or III)maintains all traffic signal and street lighting system equipment; Installs, programs, repairs, inspects, and maintains traffic signal equipment and associated electronic components by reviewing and interpreting engineering plans, blueprints, profiles, work orders, and schematics; work with various voltages (120/240, 240/480& straight 480)

  • Operates machinery and equipment in the performance of duties, including, but not limited to: bucket truck, digger derrick, concrete saw, air compressor, backhoe, various drills, various hand tools, soldering iron, generator, chainsaw, circuit testers, fleet vehicles

  • Determines needed supplies; performs fusion and mechanical splicing and integrity testing of fiber optic and copper cables; installs fiber optic cable; integrates fiber with electronics for traffic camera and systems

  • Assists IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician (Certified Level I, Il, or III) in the inspection of traffic signal and street lighting systems; performing preventive maintenance of equipment and tools

  • Cleans and organizes buildings, work areas, vehicles, materials and equipment; Installing traffic control per TMUTCD to perform inspection activities as needed; Reading and interpreting schematics, blueprints, diagrams, technical manuals, and NEC electrical codes to inspect and perform preventative maintenance

  • Prepares written reports and maintains logs and records; Develops reports on inspections and findings to deliver to supervisor(s); provides current status and information; utilizes work management system to investigate, troubleshoot, and document repairs in accordance with City, State, and Federal codes, regulations, standards and procedures. Provides administrative support as needed

  • Assists IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician (Certified Level I, Il, or III) in programming electronic signal controllers, electro-mechanical controllers, electronic conflict monitors, electronic time clocks, and vehicle detectors

  • Operates remote access computer terminal to monitor and modify signalized intersections; Installing traffic counter and speed analyzers for traffic studies; Retrieving data from controllers and counters; Determining signal malfunctions

  • A Traffic Technician is designated as an essential position requiring performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, flash flooding, tornado, ice storm, winter storm, tropical storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or man-made)required to work on-call after hours/weekends, on a rotational basis, to repair, replace, remove damaged or malfunctioned equipment

  • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

  • Non-Exempt - Full-Time

  • Non-Rotating 40hr work week Monday - Friday 8am-5pm

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED

  • Six (6) months to one (1) year experience. (Construction, electronics maintenance, or traffic signal -related role

Licenses and Certifications

Required

  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License

  • Proof of Automobile Liability Insurance

Required within one (1) year

  • Class A Driver License or approved extension by Department Director/Designee

Required within Twenty-four (24) Months of Hire

  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Certifications -Traffic Signal Technician I and Traffic Signal Inspector or approved extension by Department Director or Designee

Preferred

  • A valid State of Texas Journeyman Electrician License

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
