Job Description Summary
The purpose of this position is to improve safety and access for all modes of transportation by managing and monitoring traffic via traffic cameras and other technologies from the city's Traffic Management Center (TMC). TMC Operators are responsible for the monitoring of roadway traffic, including traffic-related incidents and special event traffic.
The ideal candidate is a technically skilled and highly attentive professional who can confidently monitor live traffic conditions and respond quickly using Intelligent Transportation Systems. This person excels at interpreting real-time information, coordinating with internal departments and regional partners, and communicating clearly during incidents, special events, or congestion. The candidate brings strong analytical abilities, experience in traffic or a related technical field, and the capacity to maintain organized logs, reports, and performance data. Essential Functions
This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following functions do not identify all duties performed by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned.
Operates a variety of standard office equipment. Utilizes and enters data or information into a personal computer to prepare and review reports and drawings, perform calculations, and to communicate.
Prepares electronic files and reports for distribution and/or mailing to other city departments and outside agencies. Meets scheduling and attendance requirements.
Effectively communicate complex situations to professionals and the public and coordinates with other City departments and external agencies.
Receives and monitors information on traffic incidents and conditions from multiple sources.
Operates Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) field devices, including Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, traffic signal controllers, and Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) to assist in moving vehicular traffic during periods of traffic congestion.
Monitor system performance and generate work order reports as required.
Perform record keeping tasks such as daily communication logs and incident reports.
Performs other related work (including weather events) as required. This may require evening, weekend, and/or holiday shifts.
Requirements
Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelors degree or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum three years of experience in a related field.
Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Drivers License. IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level I within one year of hire.
Reading: Work requires the ability to read state statutes, federal laws, technical reports and manuals, research papers, construction plans and specifications, correspondence, and legal documents, ordinances, and property legal descriptions at a college level.
Math: Work requires the ability to perform math calculations such as advanced level algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
Writing: Work requires the ability to write general correspondence, memorandums, handouts, letters, and technical engineering reports at a college level.
Managerial: Has no managerial responsibility
Budget Responsibility: Has no budgetary responsibility.
Policy/Decision Making: Moderate - The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. More complex work as well as decisions with more significant impacts are typically reviewed prior to being finalized.
Technical Skills: Comprehensive Application - Work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and systems, which affect the design and implementation of major programs, solutions for highly complex issues, and/or processes organization-wide. Independent judgment and decision-making abilities are necessary to apply technical skills effectively.
Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate - In addition to the sharing of information, interactions at this level may also include providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies/procedures. In many of the interactions, contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement.
