Job Description

This position performs technical duties to assist in the development and maintenance of the citys traffic systems.

Examples of Duties

  • Prepares and reviews design plans and specifications for: temporary traffic control, signing, pavement markings, flashing beacons, traffic signals, and intelligent transportation systems. Prepares project cost estimates.
  • Performs project management duties, including but not limited to: observes construction activities, monitors and verifies work quality, completes daily progress reports, prepares pay estimates, maintains records of materials, costs, and workmanship; performs inspections, and finalizes project records.
  • Performs project site visits, review the temporary traffic control, and provides recommendations to the project manager regarding compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Writes and reviews news releases regarding reduced lanes, street closures, and detour routes. Makes maps showing the impacted locations.
  • Assists with reviewing and issuing permits for oversized/overweight loads. Assists with preparing the annual truck route map and spring load restriction map. Assists with tracking and billing ton mile fees. Advises motor carriers of appropriate routes and restrictions.
  • Assists with programming, monitoring, and troubleshooting traffic signal systems - with the intent of providing safe and efficient traffic flow.
  • Sets up equipment and performs speed studies to determine vehicle travel speeds.
  • Responds to public and professional inquiries; provides information and assistance.
  • Monitors rights-of-way for encroachment violations. Communicates with offenders to resolve problems.
  • Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, contractors, vendors, consultants, representatives of other government agencies, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically used to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide services.
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
