Position Overview
Traffic Control Officers play an essential role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic while supporting the mission of the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office. This position requires thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, policies, standards, and regulations related to traffic control and public safety. Employees must also maintain a strong understanding of the organizational structure and operations of the Sheriffs Office, as well as effectively collaborate with other County departments and public safety partners to provide professional service to the community.
Examples of Duties
Traffic Control Officers serve as an important part of the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office by helping ensure the safety of students, parents, school staff, and motorists during peak school travel times. Their primary responsibility is to provide safe pedestrian crossings for children traveling to and from school while assisting with the orderly flow of school buses and vehicle traffic entering and exiting school campuses.
Traffic Control Officers are assigned to designated school crossings throughout the Cumberland County School System based on factors such as traffic volume, roadway design, intersection width, pedestrian activity, and the age and number of students using each crossing. Through professionalism, attentiveness, and a commitment to public safety, Traffic Control Officers help create a safe and efficient environment for the community each school day.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for the Traffic Control Officer position, applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Work Schedule
This is a part-time position requiring availability during school arrival and dismissal times. Employees must be available to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on scheduled school days. Traffic Control Officers are generally off on weekends, school holidays, and during the summer break, unless otherwise required.
