Job Title: Test Technician - Intrusion (Vehicle Dynamics / Body Sealing & Splash)

Job Description

This onsite Test Technician role focuses on vehicle dynamics, body sealing, and intrusion testing within a dedicated automotive test facility. You will support building 7 operations by conducting hands-on testing related to water, dust, airflow, and vehicle handling on a wide range of vehicles, including competitor models. The position offers exposure to advanced test equipment, complex vehicle systems, and unique test procedures that help identify and resolve sealing, handling, and intrusion issues during the vehicle development process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vehicle handling tests using specialized equipment to evaluate ride, handling, and suspension performance.
  • Conduct Vehicle Inertia Measurement Facility (VIMF) testing to measure vehicle inertia properties, including center of gravity.
  • Operate a 4-poster rig and related equipment to measure suspension articulation and vehicle dynamics characteristics.
  • Perform bench marketing tests on competitor vehicles to benchmark performance and sealing characteristics.
  • Set up and run full body airflow tests by connecting airflow equipment to vehicles to measure static body pressure and identify potential sealing issues or body leaks.
  • Conduct water intrusion tests using water tables and spray systems to identify and document water entry points and failure modes.
  • Perform dust intrusion tests using dust blow facilities to evaluate and document dust entry into vehicle bodies and interiors.
  • Proficiently dismantle and reassemble a variety of vehicles, including competitor vehicles, for test preparation, inspection, and post-test analysis.
  • Collaborate with multiple internal groups within the facility to coordinate test activities and support both body sealing/splash and vehicle handling operations.
  • Use computers and test software to set up tests, record data, document findings, and communicate results.
  • Manage multiple projects and test assignments simultaneously while working with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail when setting up tests, inspecting vehicles, and recording results.
  • Follow established test procedures, safety protocols, and quality standards during all test activities.
  • Ensure proper use and care of personal tools and facility test equipment.
  • Communicate clearly with engineers, technicians, and other team members regarding test status, issues, and outcomes.
  • Demonstrate strong work ethic, accountability, and commitment to completing tasks on time and to a high standard.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma required.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on electrical and/or mechanical experience, preferably in an automotive environment.
  • Proven mechanical skills with automotive experience, including the ability to disassemble and reassemble vehicles and components.
  • Experience working on vehicles in environments such as dealerships, independent shops, or similar settings, including interior and suspension work.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and complete work in a timely manner.
  • Task-oriented mindset with excellent attention to detail in both mechanical work and documentation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with various teams and report test results.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to support different test groups and changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated accountability and reliability, including consistent attendance and on-time performance.
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to operate a computer for data entry, test configuration, and reporting.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while managing multiple projects.
  • Ownership of basic hand tools suitable for automotive work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate degree in an automotive field is preferred.
  • ASE or State Master Mechanic Certification or equivalent experience is highly valued.
  • 2-5 years of electrical and/or mechanical firsthand experience in automotive or related fields.
  • Experience using specialized test equipment such as 4-poster rigs, airflow machines, and vehicle inertia measurement systems is beneficial.
  • Previous exposure to vehicle sealing, water intrusion, dust intrusion, or airflow testing is an advantage.
  • Strong work ethic and a genuine desire to be successful and take pride in the quality of work.
  • Team-oriented approach with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple groups.
  • Comfort working on a wide variety of vehicles, including high-value and competitor vehicles, and handling them with care.

Work Environment

This role is fully onsite at an automotive test facility in building 7, working first shift hours from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You will operate in specialized test areas dedicated to body sealing, splash, and vehicle dynamics, including facilities for airflow testing, dust intrusion testing, and water intrusion testing. The environment includes the use of advanced equipment such as airflow machines connected through vehicle windows, water tables that spray vehicles to simulate real-world conditions, dust blow systems to evaluate dust intrusion, and 4-poster rigs for measuring suspension articulation and vehicle dynamics. You will work hands-on with a wide range of vehicles, including every vehicle produced by the organization and numerous competitor vehicles, including high-value models. Basic hand tools are provided by you, while specialty tools and test equipment are supplied on site. The culture emphasizes teamwork, accountability, and a strong work ethic, offering significant exposure to unique testing methods and vehicle systems that few people experience.
