Position Summary Information Minimum Qualifications A Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related discipline is required but ABDs will not be considered. A J.D. is not sufficient for this position.

Areas of Interest No Minimum Level Required The areas of expertise for the position are open to all subfields but the preferred candidate will be a generalist with experience teaching a variety of core courses in the discipline and have an appropriate record of scholarship.

License/Certification Required Description of the Department or Unit The Department of Government and Justice Studies (GJS) is home to over 900 undergraduate majors in criminal justice and political science and over 60 graduate students in political science and public administration. It has more than 30 full-time faculty who are at the forefront of their diverse areas of expertise and are amongst the most honored teachers at Appalachian State University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The teaching load is 3 courses per semester for faculty with an active research agenda. Teaching assignments will be predominantly in-person classes to serve Appalachian States Boone Campus, however opportunities for instruction at App States Hickory campus or online instruction may be available depending on program need.

Posting Details Information Proposed Date of Hire: 08012026 Suggested Salary Range: Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ABD Consideration No ABD consideration. ABD with reduction in rank and salary will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidates salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of Assistant Professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
