Job Description Summary

Key Responsibilities

The Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations during assigned shifts at the University of Pennsylvania Class of 1923 Ice Skating Rink. Reporting to rink management, this position ensures smooth facility operations, high-quality customer service, accurate cash handling, staff supervision, and adherence to safety and operational standards.


The Shift Supervisor supervises rink staff, supports programming and events, operates ice resurfacing equipment, and ensures the cleanliness, safety, and readiness of the facility. This role requires strong operational judgment, customer service skills, and the ability to lead staff in a fast-paced recreational environment. Evening and weekend availability is required, as the rink operates during peak hours outside the traditional workday.





Job Description


Key Responsibilities

+ Supervise rink attendants and housekeeping staff during assigned shifts.

+ Oversee and support all rink programming during shifts; troubleshoot issues or escalate to management as needed.

+ Deliver excellent customer service by assisting patrons with questions regarding facility operations and programs; answer phone inquiries and seek clarification when necessary.

+ Operate ice resurfacing equipment safely and responsibly between group uses.

+ Maintain facility cleanliness by supervising housekeeping staff and performing cleaning duties as required, including sweeping locker rooms, restrooms, and common areas, and emptying trash at closing.

+ Accurately operate the point-of-sale (POS) system, process sales and payments, and balance cash registers at the end of each shift.

+ Count and verify cashier and manager change bags at the beginning and end of shifts; record all amounts in the cashier log and secure cash and checks in the safe.

+ Record chiller readings as required and report any concerns to management.

+ Complete Shift Supervisor logs at the start, during, and end of each shift.

+ Ensure coverage for scorekeeping duties by securing a replacement or assuming the role if necessary.

+ Enforce facility policies, safety standards, and professional appearance requirements for staff during shifts.






Qualifications

+ High school diploma or GED required; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

+ Demonstrated experience in operational or shift-based management required.

+ Experience in ice rink, recreation, or athletics facility operations preferred.

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills.

+ Ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse patron base.

+ Previous retail or sales experience is desirable.

+ Availability to work evenings and weekends as scheduled.

+ Ability to lift 24–50 lbs. and perform physically active work.






Dress Code & Safety Requirements

+ Clean, casual attire required; no faded, torn, or ripped clothing.

+ Shorts, tank tops, and apparel with offensive or objectionable graphics are not permitted.

+ Closed-toe, full-coverage footwear required; steel-toe shoes or boots recommended.

+ Sandals or open-toe shoes are prohibited.

About Penn Ice Rink


The University of Pennsylvania Class of 1923 Ice Skating Rink , located adjacent to the east entrance of Penn Park, has served the Penn and Philadelphia communities since opening in 1970. The 60,000-square-foot facility includes seating for approximately 2,000 spectators, locker rooms, concession areas, and event rooms for private groups of up to 50 people.




The rink features an 85’ x 200’ ice surface (16,327 square feet) and supports a wide range of programs, including recreational skating, hockey clubs for men and women, and annual tournament play. The skating season runs from mid-June through late April each year, offering year-round opportunities for healthy activity, competition, and community engagement.
