What You Will Do
The Telecommunications Field Operations team under the Infrastructure Service Division Telecommunications Services (ISD-TS) Group is seeking an energetic and customer-focused telecommunication technician. This position will use your wide-ranging skills and experience to maintain all aspects of the traditional telecom fields and challenge you with new and exciting technologies to master. The ISD-TS team installs new copper analog lines, fiber optic and copper circuits, and maintains a site-wide copper and fiber plant within the 43 square mile telecommunications infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to hone your network skills in our robust VoIP environment, with daily Broadsoft and Cisco component interactions. This is a vital part of ensuring the laboratories success.
This position will be filled at either the Telecommunications Field Operator 2/3, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 2 $54,900 - $84,300

Demonstrate your professionalism and responsibility for work control and circuit management with minimal direct supervision. This position will provide administrative and operational support to engineers and technical team members, and job assignments will include the provisioning and maintenance of TDM/VoIP switching, telecom cabling - both fiber and copper, and activities related to various telecommunications infrastructure including bucket truck operations and manhole access. This position will also support daily buried plant locating using top-of-the line locating equipment, as well as telephone (VoIP) installation and repair. In addition, the technician will perform preventive/scheduled maintenance and inspections on equipment and on the critical infrastructure including, but not limited to fiber, copper, fiber optic transmission equipment, Lightwave multiplexing equipment, AC and DC power equipment. May install and test transmission/switching equipment. troubleshoots network equipment, removes, and replaces defective modules, tracks spares, and ensures repair. Monitors and assists in executing restoration in the event of a service interruption, proactively responds to potential problem areas to ensure integrity of the telecommunication infrastructure.

Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 3 $60,500 - $93,600
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will tackle moderately difficult and complex assignments. This includes mentoring other team members and working with customers.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Proficiency with telecommunication systems, methodologies, tools and processes including standard telecom testing equipment, fiber optic testing/meters and splicing (fusion).
  • Experience with telephone installation, dispatch, workload control, and cable/fiber locating.
  • Demonstrated experience in multitasking, and customer service.

Additional Job Requirements for Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 3:
In addition to the job requirements outlined above, qualification at the Tec 3 level requires:

  • Advanced experience with telecommunication systems, methodologies, tools and processes.
  • Ability to be creative while frequently contributing to the development of end-to-end work processes.

Education/Experience for Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 2:
Position requires a high school diploma and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience for Telecommunications Field Operator Tec 3:
Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with federal facility rules and regulations on communication operations.
  • VoIP solutions experience

  • CDL driver's license and bucket truck operations

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, dust, noise, and inclement weather.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and fall-protection equipment when required.
  • Ability to operate government or company vehicles and travel between work locations.
  • Ability to respond to outages, emergencies, and after-hours support requirements.
  • Ability to safely perform work at heights using ladders, lifts, or elevated platforms when required.
  • Ability to work in secure and controlled-access environments while complying with safety and security requirements.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 Year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
