Telecommunications Systems Engineer

Location: Tempe, AZ
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire

Our client is seeking a Telecommunications Systems Engineer to support complex, large-scale projects that enable critical business operations. This position offers the opportunity to lead portions of major projects as a telecommunications scope owner while collaborating with telecom design professionals, architects, engineers, and other design disciplines.

The Telecommunications Systems Engineer will help develop challenging, fully coordinated design packages using AutoCAD and Revit MEP. Projects may include everything from Outside Plant (OSP) and inter/intra-building backbone distribution systems to communication room layouts, rack elevations, wired and wireless device plans, and cable schedules.

The successful candidate will work directly with client representatives and multidisciplinary design teams to develop facilities that meet project requirements. Designs and calculations will be completed in accordance with the NEC, applicable TIA standards, BICSI practices, and other relevant industry standards and project specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead telecommunications scopes for large and complex projects.
  • Collaborate with telecommunications designers, architects, engineers, and other discipline leads.
  • Interface directly with client representatives to understand project requirements and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Develop and review telecommunications design packages, including:
    • Outside Plant (OSP) systems
    • Inter- and intra-building backbone distribution systems
    • Communication room layouts
    • Rack elevations
    • Wired and wireless device plans
    • Cable schedules
  • Support the development of fully coordinated 3D BIM models using Revit MEP.
  • Produce construction specifications, 2D drawings, and other project deliverables.
  • Apply applicable TIA standards, BICSI design practices, NFPA 70 (NEC), and other industry standards.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to telecommunications design teams.
  • Support project estimating, scheduling, and coordination for small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Coordinate telecommunications designs with other engineering and architectural disciplines.
  • Review designs and deliverables for technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.

Qualifications

  • Two-year technical degree or four-year non-technical degree.
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in the telecommunications design and construction industry.
  • Knowledge and application of Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) standards.
  • Knowledge and application of BICSI design practices.
  • Knowledge and application of NFPA 70 (NEC) and applicable electrical design requirements.
  • Experience leading a telecommunications design team.
  • Knowledge of design and construction specifications.
  • Experience estimating and scheduling small- to medium-sized projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a technical discipline.
  • At least 3 years of telecommunications design experience in semiconductor facilities or data centers.
  • Project management experience.
  • Working knowledge of 3D BIM software, particularly Revit.
  • Knowledge and design experience with paging, intercom, and audio-visual systems.
  • Knowledge of control systems and network topology.
  • One or more of the following certifications:
    • RCDD – Registered Communications Distribution Designer
    • DCDC – Data Center Design Consultant
    • OSP – Outside Plant
    • RTPM – Registered Telecommunications Project Manager
